The City of Castlegar is located in the Regional District of Central Kootenay. Being one of the larger communities in the region, the population of Greater Castlegar comprises more than 1/4 of the entire regional district.
The City is surrounded by many rural communities which are unincorporated . The geographical proximity offers numerous mutual interests that are shared by the City and the Regional District. Yet, like many other communities, the contradicting land use objectives between two authorities do not easily allow cooperative and coherent planning.
The City is committed to coordinated land use planning and an economic development strategy on a regional basis to ensure complementary and orderly development. This can only be achieved through positive communication with the regional district as well as neighbouring municipalities. A joint effort should be made to achieve a regional growth strategy with particular reference to the fringe areas abutting the City.
