Snow Removal
Snow Removal Advisory
The City of Castlegar would like to advise residents/businesses of our snow removal procedures. There are in excess of 80 kilometres of roads within the City to maintain. Snow removal on all priority routes will normally be completed within 12 hours, depending on snowfall rates and duration. In the interest of public safety, City streets are maintained on a priority basis:
Priority 1
- Columbia Avenue/Arrow Lakes Drive from 18th Street to the Industrial Plants
- Collector and Residential Streets/Avenues with hills with grades greater than 9%
Priority 2
-
Access to emergency service buildings
- Hospital
- Ambulance
- Firehall
- Police
- Collector Streets/Avenues
- Access to schools
- Commercial/Industrial Areas
- Sidewalks in the Downtown Core
Priority 3
- All remaining residential streets
- Snow hauling from central business areas(2nd, 3rd, 4th Street and Columbia Avenue)
- Street widening
- Access to water and sewer facilities
- Hydrants
Priority 4
- Lanes
- All remaining sidewalks
- City owned parking lots
- Bus stops/Turnouts - clear path to roadway
- Snow hauling and Remainder
Businesses and Residents can assist City snow removal and sanding operations in a number of ways:
- Remove all unused vehicles, boats, trailers, etc. from the streets;
- Remove snow and ice from sidewalks fronting their properties; Park vehicles off City streets/avenues while snow removal is in progress, or when snow removal signage is in place;
- Refrain from shovelling, plowing or blowing snow from driveways onto City streets B this snow should be removed to the left side of the driveway (facing buildings/houses from the street) to reduce the amount of snow deposited across driveways during City snow removal. City equipment travels in the direction of traffic flow.
- The City will NOT clear windrows from private driveways.
- Stay Well Back from sand trucks and plows.
- Children should be advised NOT to play on snow banks adjacent to roads and to remain well away from snow removal equipment.
- DO NOT place steel posts or rocks on boulevards as markers. Those responsilbe for any such installations will be held liable for injury or damage they cause.
The City Transportation and Civic Works Department is open 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday. Snow removal related enquiries should be directed to this office at 365-5979 (or after hour messages at 365-3341).
Thank you for your cooperation.
