Burning Permits

In accordance with the Open Air Burning Bylaw No. 905 of the City of Castlegar, a burning permit is required for all open air burning year round effective May 15th, 2001. This includes the burning of lawn and garden waste and the burning of slash. Permits are not required for small backyard campfire pits used for recreational purposes only.

The permit fees for the burning of lawn and garden waste will be waived between the period of April 15th - May 15th and October 1st - 14th of each year, however, a permit is still required during these periods.

Commercial/Industrial burning permits are required year round. The open air burning of slash and/or industrial waste shall only be allowed in those areas of the City designated RR1 and Heavy Industrial by the City of Castlegar Zoning Bylaw.

All open air burning is subject to the conditions and requirements of City of Castlegar Bylaw 905 and the Province of BC Ministry of Environment Open Air Burning Smoke Control Regulations

Burning Permit Fees

  1. Open air burning of garden refuse and yard cleanup only consisting of small amounts of grass, dry leaves or dry prunings a fee of $25 shall be paid for each day of burning (fee waived between May 1st - 14th and October 1st - 14th each year).
  2. For each open air burning permit of vegetative debris (slash) a fee of $100 shall be paid for each burn.
  3. For each annual (calendar year) open air burning permit (for commercial/industrial burning only) a fee of $250 shall be paid

Violations

Under the City of Castlegar Municipal Ticketing Information Bylaw No. 731, any person(s) violating the provisions of Open Air Burning Bylaw No. 905 may be subject to penalty.
