Affordable Housing

The City of Castlegar is committed to the creation of housing that contributes to affordability and appropriateness of housing choices for its residents. The City of Castlegar completed a Housing Needs Assessment in November 2018. The Housing Needs Assessment identified the following estimates of need within the City:

  • 10 to 20 units of senior-friendly market rental housing
  • 5 to 10 units of senior-friendly non-market rental housing
  • 20 to 35 units of family-friendly market and non-market rental housing

In 2019, the City created a select committee for the duration of one year to facilitate a strategy for supporting affordable housing within the community. A series of two workshops were held to inform the committee as to the appropriate next steps in supporting the development of affordable housing to meet the identified needs of the community. The first workshop focused on verifying the information provided by the Housing Needs Assessment and the second workshop focused on exploring options with regard to meeting those needs. The City will be working with the select committee in the development of a Housing Strategy to implement the recommendations within the 2018 Housing Needs Assessment and the feedback provided to date from housing and service providers.
