City Council Members

The Castlegar City Council is comprised of the Mayor and 6 Councillors, each elected for a four year term.

Lawrence Chernoff

Mayor Lawrence Chernoff

Mayor Lawrence Chernoff has been Castlegar’s mayor since 2005. He also served as Councillor from 1987 to 1994 and 1996 to 2005. He and his wife have a son and a daughter as well as one grandchild. Mayor Chernoff serves on the Green Committee, the Finance and Corporate Services Committee, the Recreation Commission and Emergency Committees. Mayor Chernoff is also a member of the Recreation Commission, the RDCK Board, The West Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital District Board and the RDCK Resource Recovery Committee.

Bruno Tassone

Councillor Bruno Tassone

Councillor Bruno Tassone was elected to office in 2014. Councillor Tassone has lived in Castlegar his entire life, and he and his wife Kim have three children and five grandchildren. He has been involved with the Castlegar Rebels, as well as coaching and refereeing for minor hockey and minor soccer. He’s volunteered for community events such as the Kinnaird Park Expansion and Dig Dirt Day. Councillor Tassone serves on the Public Safety Committee, the Community Wellness and Social Services Committee and the Emergency Committee.

Dan Rye

Councillor Dan Rye

Councillor Dan Rye joined Council in 2011. Councillor Rye and his wife Randi moved to Castlegar 12 year ago from Vancouver Island. Before moving to Castlegar, he spent eight years on Municipal Council in Gold River, BC. Dan manages Kootenay Market in Castlegar and has been actively involved with the Rotary Club (president in 2005- 2006), the Chamber of Commerce (President 2009-2011), the United Way, the Castlegar Curling Club and the Castlegar Golf Club. Councillor Rye serves on the following Council Committees: Finance and Corporate Services Committee, the Green and Technology Committee and the Recreation Commission.

Deb McIntosh

Councillor Deb McIntosh

Councillor Deb McIntosh has served on Council since 2002. Councillor McIntosh and her husband Chris D’Arcy have five children and three grandchildren. Deb has managed the Heritage Society since 1991 and is involved with the Community Harvest Food Bank, Emergency Shelter and the New Vision Housing Society. She also serves on the Transportation and Civic Works Committee, the Planning and Development Committee, the Emergency Committee and the West Kootenay Boundary Hospital Board.

Arry Dhillon

Councillor Arry Dhillon

Councillor Arry Dhillon was elected to office in the 2016 by-election. Born and raised in Castlegar, Councillor Dhillon boasts extensive experience on Boards of Governance, not to mention serving two terms on the Simon Fraser University Senate. He is the Founder of the Direct Assistance Network and owner of Dhillon & Co. Accounting. He also brings to the Council table a four- year business degree in Entrepreneurship and Innovation, as well as in-depth accounting credentials and experience. His first position on Council Committees will be to serve as Chair of Public Safety and Co-Chair of Community Wellness and Social Services.

Florio Vassilakakis

Councillor Florio Vassilakakis

Councillor Florio Vassilakakis came to Castlegar from the Okanagan in 2004 to build a business and invest in the downtown core. While he earned his Bachelor of Science degree from UBC, his passion continues to lie in business and real estate development.  Florio has served on many boards including the Castlegar & District Chamber of Commerce and the Castlegar Golf Club.   Florio, along with his wife Rebecca, are proud to be raising their three young children in the Castlegar area. He joined Council in September 2013. Councillor Vassilakakis serves on the following Council Committees: Planning and Development Committee and the Transportation and Civic Works Committee.  He also serves as a Commissioner on the Castlegar & District Recreation Commission.

Sue Heaton-Sherstobitoff

Councillor Sue Heaton-Sherstobitoff

Councillor Sue Heaton-Sherstobitoff joined Council in 2011. Councillor Heaton-Sherstobitoff has lived in Castlegar since 1988, Sue and her husband Curtis have two daughters. Councillor Heaton-Sherstobitoff has an extensive history of volunteering within the community from Chairing the Selkirk College Foundation Board, to President of Selkirk Challengers Gymnastics Club to currently fundraising for Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Councillor Heaton-Sherstobitoff serves on the Public Safety Committee, the Community Wellness and Social Services Committee.
